What's with the Last Names?
Sanders or Saunders?

The "Sanders" last name was (and still is) a common name for African-American and Caucasian people living in and around Richlands, NC. In the early 1900s, some of James's, Betsy's, and Exline's children decided to place a "u" in the "Sanders" last name.

It is believed that this was done primarily for three reasons:

  1. To distinguish our ancestors.

  2. To make sure mail was delivered to the correct address.

  3. To avoid any confusion at the bank.
